MOT tests are strict, but most failures come down to small stuff you can catch on your own drive.
The five-minute pre-check
- Engine warning light off (an illuminated MIL is an automatic fail).
- All exterior lights working — brake, indicators, number plate light.
- Wipers and washers that actually clear the glass.
- Tyres with at least 1.6mm tread and no cords showing.
- Windscreen free of damage in the driver's line of sight.
If your engine warning light is on, get it diagnosed before MOT day — and the diagnostic fee credits toward the fix.
