When Do You Actually Need New Brakes?

Squeal, grind, or shudder — here's how to tell what your brakes are really saying before it turns into a four-figure repair.

Brakes are the one system you never want to gamble on, especially in stop-start London traffic. The good news: your car gives you plenty of warning before things get dangerous — if you know what to listen for.

The squeal: your early warning

Most modern pads have a small metal wear indicator that scrapes the disc when the pad gets thin, making a high-pitched squeal. It's annoying on purpose. Hear it consistently? You've got weeks, not months.

The grind: stop driving

A metallic grinding noise means the pad is gone and metal is cutting into your disc. Every mile now adds to the bill — you've gone from a pad replacement to pads plus discs.

Other tells

  • Soft or spongy pedal — usually air or moisture in the brake fluid.
  • Pulling to one side — a sticking caliper or uneven pads.
  • Shudder when braking — warped discs, common after hard stops.
If your brakes are talking, don't turn up the radio. A pad job is cheap. A crash isn't.
